Proofreading
Proofreading is the final check before a document goes on to be published. Proofreading includes checking, correcting and ensuring consistency of spelling, grammar and punctuation, checking that formatting is consistent throughout a document(s) and identifying areas of text where words have been used incorrectly or the meaning is unclear.
Copy-Editing
Copy-editing also includes checking for errors and ensuring consistency; however, a copy-editor also spends time checking that the text is clear, coherent and appropriate for its purpose. As an editor, I might suggest more extensive amendments to a text and would also flag any obvious factual mistakes, misquotations and potential legal issues, if appropriate.
Style sheet creation
If you/your organisation does not have a style guide yet, I can work with you to put one together. This document will help you and your colleagues be consistent in your writing style and could, for example, include your preferences on UK/US spellings, the use of numbers in text, how you set out headings etc.
Summarising
I can work with you to prepare executive summaries of annual reports or factual articles, as well as summarising longer internal documents for use online or in other published material.
Translation
I also work as a bilingual editor and have recently started translating factual documents from Swedish to English (either British or American English). Most of my experience to date has been working on business and financial texts including annual reports, social media posts and text for websites.
